Corns & Callus

A callus is a yellowish area of skin that becomes hardened due to higher pressures to an area. Corns are thickened and sometimes uncomfortable circular type lesions commonly confused with verrucae. They have a denser centre and are usually found under the feet or areas like the top of the lesser toes. They are the result of mechanical trauma from friction, higher pressure to an area or from underlying bony structure. Narrow and tapered footwear, foot deformity and gait problems are some of the reasons why corns and callus develop.

Treatments available:

  • Nail fenestration - this entails drilling small holes into the nail to allow antifungals to penetrate the deeper layers of the nail.

  • Topical antifungals - If these are used correctly alongside regular thinning down of the nail, there can be a dramatic improvement in the quality of the nail.

  • Reduction of the thickness of the nail for comfort and cosmetic appearance.

  • Foot care advice

Verrucae are harmless however they commonly can be painful when callus builds up on the surface and when they are present on weight-bearing areas of the foot.

Verrucae commonly with time will resolve on their own, however, if they are causing you discomfort physically or psychologically it could be worthwhile to pursue treatment.
